SRO Motorsports Group pays tribute to Sean Edwards who was tragically killed in an accident today in Australia.
Edwards (26) had competed in many SRO promoted series since 2005 and was a popular and well-known face in the paddock. Taking the first ever FIA European GT3 Championship along with team mate Phil Keen in 2006 with the Tech 9 Porsche team, Edwards announced himself as a major talent on the International scene. At the tender age of 19, he and Keen took a hat-trick of victories at Dijon and Mugello to seal the inaugural title.
By 2007 Edwards had graduated to the FIA GT Championship thanks to taking the Michelin Trophy the previous season, which promoted him to the Championship, where again raced with the Tech 9 team, partnering Leo Machitski. Along with Sascha Maassen and Machitski he finished 3rd at the Spa 24 Hours that year in GT2. A year later Edwards took part in the Silverstone round of the FIA GT Championship with Miro Konopka in an ARC Bratislava entered Saleen S7..
The Blancpain Endurance Series also saw Edwards compete and score some well-judged results, including a Pro-Am win at the Nürburgring in 2012, alongside Steve Jans and Oliver Morley in a Black Falcon entered Mercedes SLS AMG GT3. The trio then took a 3rd place at Navarra in the season finale.
2013 was proving to be Sean Edwards’most successful season so far with a victory, again with Black Falcon Mercedes in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, as well as several wins in the Porsche Supercup where he led the championship standings with just one round remaining.
The son of former Grand Prix driver, Guy Edwards, Sean was a popular and well respected member of the International racing community. His untimely death will be felt throughout the racing industry and SRO Motorsports Group would like to express its sincere condolences to Sean’s family and his many friends.
